Suzanne Vega to Perform at Mahaiwe

- September 10, 2007

GREAT BARRINGTON - Suzanne Vega, an American singer/songwriter known for her literate lyrics and eclectic folk-inspired music, will appear Sunday, Sept. 16, at the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center.

She was the first artist on stage at the very first Lilith Fair. Identified for "Tom’s Diner" (sampled and re-recorded by at least 25 other musicians including Will Smith, REM and Lil’ Kim), as well as "Luka," the song that honored Vega as the second woman to win the MTV prize for best female singer (beating Cher), her career has been a diverse journey. Amy Ray of the Indigo Girls was quoted in a July 2000 AP interview as saying the group's initial goal was "to get big enough to open for Suzanne Vega."

Her first gig was at Carnegie Hall with Pete Seeger at age 12; she has released nine original albums in addition to participating in projects such as "Some Journey," the documentary that followed Vega from her high-profile appearance at the 2004 Isle of Wight festival alongside David Bowie and the Who to her home life, centered around her 9-year-old daughter, to the recording of her first new album in five years with Blue Note Records. On Sept. 17, 2006, she performed in Central Park as part of a benefit concert for The Save Darfur Coalition. Vega's new album "Beauty & Crime" was released to great reviews in July 17 on Blue Note Records. Visit Vega at www.suzannevega.com

Vega plays the Mahaiwe stage on Sunday, Sept. 16, at 7 p.m. Tickets are $30/$38. For ticket information, box office at 413-528-0100 Tuesdays through Saturdays from noon to 6 and three hours prior to showtimes on Sundays and Mondays. Information, www.mahaiwe.org
