Wally Turning 10 Years Old

- September 19, 2007

PITTSFIELD – The Berkshire Museum will celebrate the 10th "birthday" of Wally, the stegosaurus on the front lawn, with a free family day on Monday, Oct. 8, from 1 to 3 p.m., the festivities will include a roaming magician and balloon artist Mr. Twisty, face painting, and hands-on art-making.

In an annual tradition, children are encouraged to bring Wally a homemade birthday card. At 2 p.m., guests will gather to sing "Happy Birthday," followed by cake. Admission to the museum and all activities is free that day.

At craft stations inside, children may make their own "Wally wear" - a headdress inspired by the dinosaur.

The Amazing Mr. Twisty (aka Chad Currin) has appeared on Nickelodeon, the Games and Sports Network, and the Discovery Channel. He has performed at hundreds of fairs and festivals and thousands of events across the country. He has been performing his blend of comedy and magic as Mr. Twisty and as other characters for more than 25 years.

Currently on view at the museum is the special exhibition "Kid Stuff: Great Toys from Our Childhood" featuring 200 vintage toys, including Barbie, G.I. Joe, Mr. Potato Head, Nerf, Radio Flyer, Lionel Trains, Lego, Slinky, Silly Putty, and more. The exhibition also features interactives and hands-on versions of many toys.

The free day includes the museum aquarium, which includes a hands-on touch tank and more than 30 tanks and terrariums of both native and exotic species; paleontology gallery, including dinosaur dig; Berkshire Backyards gallery exploring the natural history of the region with interactive stations; the dioramas of "The World in Miniature"; the gallery "Alexander Calder: An Artist at Play," and art and ancient Egypt galleries.

The museum is at 39 South St. on Route 7. The galleries are open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays noon to 5 p.m. For more information: (413) 443-7171, Ext. 10, or berkshiremuseum.org.
