First Congregational Church-UCC of Williamstown

Service of Worship at 10:30 am
This Sunday, October 21, 2007. The Sermon this morning "It's a Struggle" will be based on Genesis 32: 22-31 and Luke 18: 1-8, on two persistent characters from the Bible: Jacob wrestling the angel and the widow nagging the judge.
The Senior Choir, under the direction of Minister of Music Edwin Lawrence, will perform a Spiritual arr. by John Bell, "Over My Head" as the Indroit, and Leo Sowerby's, "I Will Lift Mine Up Eyes" as the Anthem.
In the afternoon we will carry through with the theme of persistence as we join with other Northern Berkshire churches in the CROP walk for hunger, a long-standing practice of Church World Service which raises money annually for both local and international programs to combat hunger. Interested folk can meet at 1 pm at the First Congregational Church (UCC) North Adams. The Williamstown confirmation class will participate in the walk, as will other children from our Sunday School.
Join us at 5:00 for a special "Global Vespers" service. This service will celebrate the universal theme of harvest. The music will draw on the rich traditions of congregational song from around the world. Expect to join in for the straightforward, reverent and joyous musical expressions people in all places have used to celebrate the fruits of the harvest season. Music will include selections from Asian, African, Hispanic and African-American Gospel sources.
At a time not yet determined - probably this same day - there will be a meeting for those interested in the project of sending books to southern Sudan. A founding member of S.A.F.E. (Sudan Association For Education) will be visiting with us and telling us how we can participate in this program. Call 458-9882 and leave a message for more information.

Williamstown Board Opts to Negotiate with College on Water St. Lot
By Stephen DravisiBerkshires Staff
Newly elected board member Nate Budington, far left, participates in his first in-person meeting along with, from left, Matt Neely, Stephanie Boyd, Peter Beck, Shana Dixon and Town Manager Robert Menicocci.
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Select Board on Monday decided to enter into negotiations with Williams College on the sale of the vacant town-owned lot at 59 Water St.
But the board members made it clear that the college's proposal to acquire the lot is a starting point, not a final deal that the elected officials would accept.
"For the sake of continued conversation, I'm in favor of [awarding Williams the site], but if this process wasn't continued with the opportunity for further negotiation, I wouldn't vote to continue this," Peter Beck said. "I think that next step is necessary for us to get to a yes on this."
"I think there's wide agreement on that," Matthew Neely said just before the 5-0 vote to enter talks with the college.
Williams was the sole respondent to a town-issued request for proposals to develop the former town garage site, currently a dirt lot.
The college's stated intent is to build a new Facilities office and create up to 170 parking spaces at 59 Water Street. That use will allow the college to redevelop the current Facilities building site and parking lot as part of a reconception of the school's indoor athletic and recreation facilities.
Under the terms of the RFP, the college's proposal was subjected to review by an ad hoc advisory committee to the town manager, who brought the question to the Select Board. That board will have the final say on any purchase and sales agreement.
