Business BriefsState House News Service - October 22, 2007
HOUSING PRICES AND SALES DROP, CONTINUING DOWNWARD TREND: Massachusetts home prices and sales continue to fall, with median prices for single-family homes down 4.4 percent last month from September 2006.
The Warren Group figures put the decline in sales of detached single-family homes at 18.7 percent. According to Massachusetts Association of Realtors' figures, sales had fallen 13.7 percent from September 2006, and prices had slipped 0.3 percent during that time. The numbers come amidst a national credit crunch, and as state policymakers scramble to assist homebuyers struggling with burdensome mortgages and facing foreclosure. The realtors association estimated the third quarter saw single-family home sales rise slightly, 0.4 percent, with condominium sales down 2.4 percent, and multi-family home sales tumbling 24.3 percent, but accounting for under 7 percent of the residential market.
SMOOTHER PERMITTING PROCESS, NEW GREENHOUSE TESTS FOR ROADSIDE DEVELOPERS: Developers would have easier access to permits for building projects along state roads under regulations the Patrick administration announced Monday. The administration said three review phases for most projects would not exceed an aggregate 75 business days.
MassHighway "curb cut" permits allow developers to take advantage of state roads. Curb-cut applicants whose projects meet traffic and parking thresholds could have to submit to a greenhouse gas emissions review under a finalized Massachusetts Environmental Policy Act regulation. According to a press release, the MEPA office projected the new policy could affect between 80 and 100 projects per year. |
