Youth Commission Hosting Mayoral Debate/Forum - October 22, 2007
On Wednesday, October 24th, the Pittsfield Youth Commission will host the second Mayoral Debate for the 2007 election at St. Joseph Central High School at 10am. The Youth Commission had planned for a debate format, but will now host only one mayoral candidate, the current mayor, James M. Ruberto, as Donna Walto is unable to attend.
Members of the Youth Commission have been working hard to understand local government issues that affect their community and their lives. The Commission, through discussions with youth and community leaders has created a number of challenging and politically relevant questions that they hope to present at the debate.
“We wanted to host this debate during the day at St. Joe’s as to involve as many students in local government as possible,” said President of the Youth Commission and senior at Pittsfield High School, Michael Bloomberg. Students from St. Joseph’s High School will also have an opportunity to ask questions that address present youth concerns as well as issues that will affect them in the future.
The process involved in planning for these debates has been the most important aspect of the undertaking. “Sitting down with groups of students and understanding what is important to them while listening to community leaders explain the inner workings of local government has proven to be an enlightening process,” said Brittany Berman, Youth Commission Coordinator. “Both students and leaders have learned much from each other and have learned that government truly affects and can actively engage all ages.”
The mission of the Youth Commission is to empower the youth of Pittsfield by providing them with a voice, as active and participating young citizens within the community, represent all of the youth of Pittsfield by creating and linking them to new and existing activities and opportunities, and connect the youth of Pittsfield by creating a more communal and cohesive youth base.
