Festival Of Trees: “On The Move” Gala Preview Party

Tickets are now on sale for the 23rd annual Festival of Trees Gala Preview Party at the Berkshire Museum in downtown Pittsfield on Friday, November 16, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. This year’s Festival theme is “On the Move,” featuring over 200 trees decked in all forms of locomotion. Live music will be provided by the Flying Garbanzos. Kirklyn Catering of Ye Old Forge Restaurant will serve light hors d’oeuvres and refreshments. Advance gala tickets are $55 ($45 members) in advance. Treetop Benefactor tickets, which include a pre-party champagne reception, are $100. Tickets will be $60 at the door. The menu includes a bruschetta bar, vegetable crudités, marinated grilled tuna with wasabi drizzle, an autumn bisque, crab purses, and assorted desserts, including transport themed cookies, as well as a full bar. Live music will be performed by local folk group the Flying Garbanzos. Festive attire is suggested. On the Move marks the 23rd year of the Festival of Trees at the Berkshire Museum. The exhibition this year will feature over 200 trees from the community, all in the theme of transportation, as well as a model train display, tin windup toys, and antique modes of transport from the Museum’s own collection. The Festival of Trees will be open to the public from Saturday, November 17 to Monday, December 31. Proceeds from the Festival of Trees will benefit the Berkshire Museum’s educational programs. The Berkshire Museum is located at 39 South Street on Route 7 in Downtown Pittsfield. Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building. 

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu. 

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building. 

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.  

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns. 

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot. 

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
