Costi Wins Ward 2 with Slim Margin, Bean No Challenge for Markham in Ward 1By Tammy Daniels - November 06, 2007
PITTSFIELD - Louis A. Costi's margin of victory in Ward 2 was a slim 22 votes on Tuesday night.
"One vote or 20 votes, I won and I'm happy," said the newly re-elected councilor. "I'm proud of what I've done."
Costi won a third term on the 11-seat council. A local businessman, he ran on a platform of making Pittsfield welcoming to both business and art endeavors and promoting economic development that will benefit his ward, in the city's northeast corner.
His opponent, Kevin J. Morandi, moved to the city from Lee last year. While disappointed with his defeat, he was pleased at his showing in his adopted city.
"I've been here 14 months and I lost by 22 votes to someone who's been here 41 years," said Morandi, who said he knocked on upwards of 800 doors to meet voters. "I'm very proud of how the voters spoke and of the work my committee did."
Costi put the close vote to his opponent's willingness to cater to potential constituents.
"Morandi told people what they wanted to hear. He said he could get rid of Hill 78 (a PCB-contaminated spot) and that got attention."
The concilor said he's ready to continue serving his district. "I've worked hard for this ward," said Costi.
In Ward 1, incumbent Lewis Markham Jr. easily took the election from challenger William Bean, who received only 298 of the 1,252 votes cast.
Markham, who was seeking his third consecutive term, has said he plans to continue the city's progress in the next two years by moving into the neighborhoods.
Neither Bean nor Markham could be reached for comment. |
