TROY, N.Y.  The Williams men's basketball team (4-0) battled to a 75-65 victory over RPI (1-2) on Sunday, getting to the foul line 24 times in the second half. On the day Williams attempted 21 more free throws than the Red Hawks, and the second half surge from the charity stripe played a key role in the Ephs overcoming a one point deficit at the half in Robison Gym at RPI.
Despite having four players score in double digits, the Ephs shot only 42 percent from the field  down substantially from sizzling numbers in their first two games.
Said Eph coach Dave Paulsen, "it was a good win when we didn't play our best offensively ... I think only one of our starters shot above 50 percent for the game, but - especially in the second half  we moved the ball, limited the turnovers, and got to the foul line which I think was key."
As is usually the case in college basketball, it was all about the second half on Sunday for the Ephs. In addition to holding RPI to just 11 percent shooting from beyond the arc in the second half, Williams did an improved job guarding the game's leading scorer, Red Hawk senior forward Sam Simmons (20 points, 6 rebounds).
"The kid Simmons is as good an inside player as we've seen this year, and we did a better job of making him work for his shot in the second half," said Paulsen.
As has often been the case over the last few seasons, senior Chris Shalvoy paced the Ephs, scoring 16 points while dishing out 6 assists (both team-highs). Sophomore Blake Shultz and Junior Kevin Snyder added 14 and 12 points respectively, while sophomore Joe Geohegan added 11.
Paulsen, however, was quick to praise his bench: "Matt Weisbrot (senior) and Grant Meyer (junior) did a great job for us off the bench,
especially on the glass as Meyer grabbed four offensive rebounds for us."
For the first time this season the Ephs failed to out rebound their opponent more than 10, but still won the rebounding battle 33-31.
After going 4-0 on the road to start the season, the Ephs will play their home opener Tuesday against Framingham State. The game is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m.

Williamstown Board Opts to Negotiate with College on Water St. Lot
By Stephen DravisiBerkshires Staff
Newly elected board member Nate Budington, far left, participates in his first in-person meeting along with, from left, Matt Neely, Stephanie Boyd, Peter Beck, Shana Dixon and Town Manager Robert Menicocci.
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Select Board on Monday decided to enter into negotiations with Williams College on the sale of the vacant town-owned lot at 59 Water St.
But the board members made it clear that the college's proposal to acquire the lot is a starting point, not a final deal that the elected officials would accept.
"For the sake of continued conversation, I'm in favor of [awarding Williams the site], but if this process wasn't continued with the opportunity for further negotiation, I wouldn't vote to continue this," Peter Beck said. "I think that next step is necessary for us to get to a yes on this."
"I think there's wide agreement on that," Matthew Neely said just before the 5-0 vote to enter talks with the college.
Williams was the sole respondent to a town-issued request for proposals to develop the former town garage site, currently a dirt lot.
The college's stated intent is to build a new Facilities office and create up to 170 parking spaces at 59 Water Street. That use will allow the college to redevelop the current Facilities building site and parking lot as part of a reconception of the school's indoor athletic and recreation facilities.
Under the terms of the RFP, the college's proposal was subjected to review by an ad hoc advisory committee to the town manager, who brought the question to the Select Board. That board will have the final say on any purchase and sales agreement.
