Quilt Exhibit Featured at Milne Library - November 26, 2007
WILLIAMSTOWN - The David and Joyce Milne Public Library will have the quilts of Maiko Takigawa on display for the month of December.
Takigawa was born in Mie-ken, Japan, and has been sewing since she was 9. Her mother and aunt are stitchers and they were her teachers in Japan.
In May 2003, she came to the United States and is living in Bennington, Vt., because of her husband’s profession. In the fall of that same year, with a help of few books she started quilting. Trying to teach herself to quilt was very limiting. However, when she joined the Quiet Valley Quilters Guild the world of quilting opened up. "The wonderful quilters of the guild are inspirational and my mentors" said Takigawa.
"First I did the pieced quilts and then I started applique, which I really enjoy. My dream is to make a Baltimore album quilt and the Jane Stickle quilt. What a challenge that would be!"
Takigawa has won first in people's choice at Bennington Quilt Fest in 2004, in the other quilted category in 2005 and in bed size category in 2006. She won third at the Vermont Quilt Fest in 2005 in appliqued wall hanging, people’s choice and judge's choice and first at Hildene's Needlework Show 2006. |
