Local Woman Injured in Stamford AccidentBy Tammy Daniels - November 26, 2007
 | | Hank Goodermote shows where an SUV hit a pole near his home. | STAMFORD, Vt. - A Massachusetts woman was injured early Monday morning after her vehicle left the road, hit a utility pole and came to rest in a ditch on Main Road.
The woman, who reportedly lives in North Adams, was taken to North Adams Regional Hospital by North Adams Ambulance Service. Her condition was unknown and no further information was available. State police are investigating the accident but had not released a report by late Monday.
The Hyundai was towed away by Dean's Quality Auto and Truck Repair of North Adams.
Hank Goodermote of 1635 Main Road said the commotion woke him up at about 3 a.m.
"I guess it did," said Goodermote later that morning. "It was an awful loud noise. I got right up out of bed."
The woman was heading south on Main Road (Routes 8 and 100) when her silver Hyundai Sante Fe apparently left the roadway as she took a curve in the road just north of Clayton Avenue. The vehicle wiped out a line of mailboxes before taking a chunk of the pole. |
The sport utility vehicle reportedly went airborne before landing in the ditch. It continued traveling south, taking out a row of mailboxes from the back side and hitting the pole with such force that it carved out a chunk near the bottom and spun the SUV around 180 degrees.
Goodermote said the SUV was pointing north, with its rear end up in the air at the end of the ditch where a driveway cut across. He said the woman had gotten out and gone to a neighbor's house to call for help.
He pointed back to his house, where the utility lines had pulled away the siding. The force of the collision had created a whiplash effect on the pole across the street from his house, Goodermote said, yanking the siding away. A whiplash effect yanked the siding off Goodermote's home. |
Part of Goodermote's lawn was covered in mud and the ditch was dug up and filled with the plastic shards of mailboxes.
Goodermote said he's seen at least 25 accidents on the curve in his 50 years there. He was pretty sure the commotion Monday meant another one - and he's pretty sure it won't be the last. |
