Senior guard Asif Abdul-Wadud and first year forward Brad Thomka both scored 18 points to help the visiting Golden Bears defeat MCLA tonight at the Amsler Campus Center. With a 73-68 win WNEC evens their record at 2-2 while MCLA falls to 1-2 in a very early season.
This was the home opener for the Trailblazers and with that a new look as they battled all night against the defending ECAC DIII Champions. Four MCLA players were in double figures: Dave Bisesi (17), Henry Schrader (14), Diante Ellis (14), and Jon Greenberg (13). This also marked the second double-double of the season for Ellis as he grabbed 12 rebounds.
WNEC jumped out to an early 19-6 lead, but the Trailblazers quietly chipped away at that lead getting as close as six points in the first half and heading into the break only eight points behind.
In his first year at MCLA, Coach Jamie Morrison, while not totally satisfied with tonight's result, was pleased with the tremendous effort his team displayed. MCLA out-rebounded the Golden Bears by a 39-31 margin. It was that work ethic from the Trailblazers that kept the game tight all night. In the second half MCLA turned up their scoring shooting 59% from the floor, actually outscoring the visitors with a 42-39 effort. Bisesi, MCLA's leading scorer (18.5/game) was held to just two points in the first half, but WNEC couldn't contain him as he went on the score 16 second half points. Unfortunately, it seemed with each MCLA push WNEC would answer back. With just 2:07 left in the game MCLA pulled within four points, but an untimely turnover and a couple missed shots the Trailblazers were forced to foul. WNEC's Kyle Fredette pulled down 11 second half rebounds that ended up being a key in the win for the Golden Bears.
WNEC will play at Springfield College in a city match-up this Friday at 8:00pm
MCLA will travel this coming weekend to Eastern Nazarene for the Crusader Classic taking on Mitchell College at 6:00. The Trailblazers will be home two more times this semester when they host Johnson State College on Saturday the 8th and Mitchell College on Wednesday the 12th.
