City Prepared for Snow

Staff reports - December 02, 2007

NORTH ADAMS - With the first big snowfall of the season expected to hit this evening, Mayor John Barrett III said the city is prepared for a blizzard - but he doubts the snow will be a real problem.

"This is nothing; we're ready to go. We got some snow on Friday, so we've already got one [storm] under our belts. We're pretty well prepared," the mayor said on Sunday afternoon.

Scattered snowfall throughout the county on Sunday left roads icy and slippery and more is expected to fall into Monday afternoon. The storm, which walloped the Midwest on Saturday, will drop 6 to 10 inches of snow on the Northeast over the next two days. A mixture of snow and sleet is predicted and winds are expected to be 15 to 25 miles per hour on Monday morning.

Barrett said the city's public works department is completely prepared to handle any storm, no matter the severity.

"It's just like any athletic team. If you don't have any injuries, you'll be fine. As long as we don't have any breakdowns, it'll be fine," he said.

Barrett said he did not know whether there would be school cancellations.

"We don't know how much is going to turn into sleet and it's not expected to pick up until the night. We just have to wait and see," he said.

the streets in the city as of 11am monday december 3rs are horrible, i hope this is not a sign of things to come this winter, usually the city does a remarkable job at keeping all of our streets clean

They weren't prepared Friday night. Why did it take the plows so long to get out there? Cars were literally sliding backwards down Union Street.
