NORTH ADAMS - The MCLA women's basketball team took a nine-point lead into the half on Tuesday but let it slip away, falling to visiting Albany College of Pharmacy, 48-58. It was a slow start to the night for both teams, and just under two minutes into the game ACP got on the board first with a field goal from Sara Gruber of Danvers. Four minutes into the game the Trailblazers would finally get on the board as Taylor Kenyon of North Bennington, Vt., sunk both free throws. Coming off a season high 16-point game last Thursday, Amanda Borsotti of Lee went on another tear, improving her season high to 17 points. She entered the game with ACP leading 6-2, seven minutes into the game, and she went 4 for 5 from behind the arch sparking a 17-6 MCLA run. In the first half MCLA shot 32 percent to ACP's 15 percent and lead at the half 28-19. ACP's Pam Leonard of New Milford, N.J., owned the boards all night, collecting 13 rebounds and finished the game with a season high 23 rebounds. In the second half, the Panthers battled back and took the lead with 11:30 left in the game. Kelly VanValkenburgh of Hunter, N.Y., held to only a point in the first half, lead the way in the second half and finished with 13 points. The final 11 minutes of the game, the teams went back and forth with MCLA finally taking the lead back with 4:40 left on Larissa Miner's (Greenfield) field goal. Ali Leveille of Southampton followed with a free throw to give the Trailblazers a two-point lead. It was in these final minutes that MCLA was plagued by an untimely turnover, fouls, and missed foul shots (50 percent in the game) while ACP capitalized on their free throws (77 percent in the half); VanValkenburgh's key field goals and a perfect 8 for 8 from the line was the difference for the Panthers. Leonard seemed to be there on each MCLA miss, pulling down eight second-half defensive rebounds. She also added 10 points on the night. Teammate Amber Jillson of Whitehall, N.Y., finished the game with 11 points. For the Trailblazers, Laura Silverman of Clifton Park, N.Y., lead the team with nine rebounds. MCLA (3-3) will be home again Thursday at 7 p.m. when they host Russell Sage College.
