MRSA Topic of Health Education Program - December 06, 2007
PITTSFIELD - The Berkshire Area Health Education Center Inc. will present the continuing education program "Multidrug Resistant Micro-Organisms/MRSA: Controversy and Common Sense" on Wednesday, Jan. 2, from 3 to 5 p.m., at the Tally Ho Room at Eastover Resort and Conference Center, 430 Walker St., Lenox.
The presenter will be Mary Ellen Scales, a registered nurse and manager of infection control at Bay State Medical Center in Springfield. She is president-elect of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology. She is also a recent task force leader of an optimum infection control program and vice chairman of an expert panel for health care-acquired infections for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.
The federal Center for Disease Control estimates that patients develop 1.7 million infections in hospitals each year and those infections cause or contribute to the death of 99,000 people a year, or about 270 a day.
Drug-resistant breeds of bacteria are far more prevalent than previously thought and present a more comprehensive picture of the burden of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). This program will highlight the current literature on multidrug resistant micro-organisms including MRSA infections across the continuum of care. Intervention measures presented will include surveillance methods for identifying and controlling MRSA transmission, prevention of MRSA and application to various health care settings. Community-acquired MRSA will also be addressed.
Program registration begins at 2:30 p.m. Continuing education credits will be available for nurses, EMTs, respiratory therapists, nursing home administrators, dental hygienists/assistants, and radiologic technologists.
The $38 fee includes refreshments, program materials and the continuing education certificate. Advance registration and payment are required. A late fee of $5 will apply after Jan. 16 and the fee for walk-in registrations will be $53. Berkshire AHEC is supported in part by HRSA, the state and University of Massachusetts Medical School as part of the Mass AHEC Network.
