Berkshire Leadership Program Class of 2007 Graduates 25 Community Leaders - December 11, 2007
On Thursday, November 15, 2007, the Berkshire Leadership Program celebrated its eleventh commencement ceremony by graduating 25 community leaders. Since 1997, 289 individuals have completed the Berkshire Leadership Program. The Program seeks, prepares, involves, and sustains leaders from diverse backgrounds who are committed and competent to address community challenges and improve the quality of life in the Berkshires.
The Berkshire Leadership Program kicks off with a two-day retreat, facilitated by professionals, which includes training in all aspects of leadership, problem-solving techniques and networking. The retreat is followed by nine weekly four-hour evening sessions on specific topic including government, environment, culture and tourism, economic development, media, education, community service, healthcare, and civic responsibility.
Todd Wemette, a 2007 BLP participant and the Director of Finance at the Red Lion Inn in Stockbridge said, “As a resident of New York State, the Berkshire Leadership Program offered me an avenue to learn very quickly about Berkshire County’s strengths, weaknesses, challenges, and opportunities both in the short term and long term. With this knowledge, it provided me a network of civic-minded individuals who I can either use as a resource or be used as a resource to help drive social & economic programs around the county. I feel the support this network develops, will also allow ideas and programs to move on a much faster.”
The Berkshire Leadership Program also highlights different management and leadership styles. “(The Program) taught me that although I have a particular style of leadership/management, I can draw on other underutilized patterns of behavior within myself to better lead or more fully participate in group efforts,” said Jana Hunkler Brule, Project Manager for Berkshire Rides in North Adams and participant in the 2007 class.
Each year up to 30 candidates are selected to participate in the program. Selection is based on a written application and written references. The 2008 program will begin on Friday, September 6, 2008.
