Sports 'N Stuff: Stage Is Set for Run to Super Bowl XLIIBy Brian Flagg - January 07, 2008
Well the first round is over and the match-ups for next weekend in the NFL are set.
After a what I think was a lackluster first round, next weekend should bring some much more exciting games. Other than the Steelers/Jaguars game, I was pretty bored watching the games this weekend.
Seattle put up 35 points, mostly toward the end of their game, bringing to end an emotional run for the Redskins since the untimely death of Sean Taylor. While Eli Manning had a very good game for the "G-men," the Buccaneers were flat and couldn't get anything going in a 24-14 loss. Finally, the Chargers and Titans played a completely boring game.
The Titans and Vince Young managed two field goals. The Chargers, who have the best offensive player in football in LaDainian Tomlinson, posted a mere 17 and really looked stagnant on offense. That brings us to next weekend's contests. If these teams don't get their "you know whats in gear" they will be destroyed by the home teams.
Here are the match-ups and my picks:
Seahawks at Packers – Traditionally, the Packers have been very good at home and Brett Favre is having another fantastic year. The Seahawks have not been able to get Shawn Alexander on track, and other than a brief exhibition late in this weekend's game, have had a less than spectacular offense. Brett Favre WILL light it up and I don’t think Seattle can hang. I will call the Packers over the Seahawks, 31–17.
Giants at Cowboys – The Giants defense has been mauling QB's this year but Tony Romo is very elusive and can make things happen on the run. The Cowboys' running game will keep those defensive tackles honest. Play action will open Jason Witten and T.O. down the field and the 'Boys will be too much. Cowboys with 28 and Giants, 24.
Jaguars at Patriots – David Garrard's run in the postseason is OVER. The Jags cannot contend with all the points the Pats will put up nor can they score enough against that defense. MVP quarterback plus Coach of the Year plus a team playing as well as any team in history equals the Patriots over the Jaguars, 41–20.
Chargers at Colts – Well at least the Chargers got rid of their "one and done" demon with an ugly win over Tennessee. But now the second round poses a really big problem – the Colts. The Colts are the only team in NFL history to post 12 wins in five straight seasons. With all the hype over the Patriots this weekend, and rightly so, Indy has hung around and gotten another first round bye. A power running game and the masterful passing game of Peyton Manning will lead the Colts to victory 35–20.
So there they are. Let me know what you think. |
