Eph Men Swim Past Union College

- January 07, 2008

WILLIAMSTOWN - The Williams College men's swimming and diving team (3-0) won 14 events en route to a 208-80 victory over Union College. The meet was the first action the Ephs have seen since beating Boston College on Dec. 2.

"Today we were really able to spread out our lineup a lot," said head coach Steve Kuster. "They're were a lot of different people in races they don't normally swim, and it was a good showing of our depth."

Two top performers for the Ephs on the day actually participated in the 200 yard freestyle together. Sophomores Tim Ryan and Norman Scott, along with senior Matt Neuber and first-year Andrew D'Ignazio, swam the fastest time at 1:29.10. Ryan went on to finish first in the 200-yard butterfly (1:58.33), while Scott scored first-place finishes in both the 50-yard freestyle (22.21) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:47.95).

Also scoring multiple first-place finishes for the Ephs were seniors Henry Felker and Chris Millen, junior Tyler Bonewell, and sophomore Chris Milliken. Millen swam the fastest time in two events, the 100-yard butterfly (52.82) and the 100-yard backstroke (54.66), while Milliken bested the field in the 1 meter dive (191.32) and the 3 meter dive (207.07).

In the 200-yard medley relay, Bonewell and Felker teamed up with seniors Ben Bullitt and Alex Wentworth-Ping to finish first with a time of 1:38.11.  Felker followed that victory with another one in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:11.67), while Bonewell touched the wall first in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:01.41).

Rounding out the Eph victories were junior Thatcher Heumann in the 200 yard IM (1:58.91), sophomore Eddie Layng in the 100-yard freestyle (48.99), and first-year Gary Robertson in the 200-yard freestyle (1:46.93).

"There were definitely some encouraging swims and performances today," said Kuster. "Hopefully, this keeps the ball rolling toward a good showing next weekend."

The Ephs next see action Jan. 12 at Amherst.
