Nursing Home Ombudsman Volunteers Needed

- January 11, 2008

PITTSFIELD - Elder Services of Berkshire County will hold a training program for individuals wishing to serve as long-term care ombudsman volunteers.

Ombudsmen protect the rights nursing and rest home residents. Volunteers who successfully complete the three-day program in February will be able to receive, investigate, and mediate complaints made by, or on behalf of such residents.

Volunteers participate in the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program at Elder Services. The mission of this program, established by the Older Americans Act in 1973, is to protect residents' rights, to provide information, and to advocate for positive changes in the long-term care system. Volunteers are trained and certified by the Massachusetts Executive Office of Elder Affairs.

Elder Services-certified ombudsmen visit the 17 nursing and rest homes in the county at least weekly. They and other local program staff work closely with nursing and rest home administrators, the state Department of Public Health and the Office of Elder Affairs to ensure that the rights and dignity of all nursing home residents are respected.

For additional information, call Dorinda Gamberdella, ombudsman program director, at 236-1726. Training will be held Feb. 6, 7 and 8,  from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Elder Services' office at 66 Wendell Ave.
