Documentary Examines the Business of Birth - February 19, 2008
WILLIAMSTOWN - Images Cinema will present a sneak preview of "The Business of Being Born," a new documentary about the issues surrounding childbirth in this country, on Sunday, Feb. 24, at 2:30 p.m.
The screening is sponsored by Shima, a natural parenting boutique, in celebration of its grand opening on March 22 in North Adams.
Owned by Libbie Pike and Suzy Helme, Shima will open at 105 Main St. on March 4. It will offer fair-trade and made-in-the-USA clothes, toys, skin care and gear for families from pregnancy through early childhood.
"In presenting 'The Business of Being Born,' we hope people will walk away with the empowerment to focus on the possibilities and choices we all have when we choose where and how to give birth, whether it is at hospital or home," saidPike. "There is so much information and education out there in regards to birth; this movie is simply a stepping stone to seeking more."
After a disappointing birth experience with her first child, actress Ricki Lake recruited filmmaker Abby Epstein to examine and question the way American women have babies.
The film interlaces birth stories with historical, political and scientific insights and statistics about the current maternity care system. When Epstein discovers she is pregnant during the making of the film, the journey becomes even more personal.
Images Cinema is at 50 Spring St. For more information: www.imagescinema.org. |
