Berkshire AHEC Sets Program on Eating Disorders
PITTSFIELD - Berkshire Area Health Education Center Inc. will offer a continuing professional development training, "“Eating Disorders: Differential Diagnosis and Treatment Challenges," on Thursday April 3.The training will run from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Log Cabin Banquet and Meeting House at 500 Easthampton Road, Holyoke. The program is funded by the Tara Sheehan Fund in memory of Sheehan, who died in February 2002 after a long struggle with anorexia.
Presenter Mona Villapiano is a licensed psychologist specializing in the treatment of eating disorders. Over the past 25 years, she has developed and directed treatment programs for clients with eating disorders and is the co-author of two books, "Eating Disorders: Time for Change" and "Eating Disorders: Journey to Recovery Workbook."
Clients with eating disorders require highly coordinated, vigilant and specialized treatment as many present with one or many diagnoses or circumstances. This training will present ways to treat challenging clients of all ages. The combined use of cognitive-behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy and psychodynamic psychotherapy will be reviewed. As family therapy is considered the treatment of choice for children and adolescents, Maudsley Family Therapy will also be discussed.
Registration and continental breakfast begin at 9. Continuing education credits will be available for psychologists, nurses, licensed mental health and substance abuse counselors, marriage and family therapists, registered dieticians and dental hygienists.
The $60 fee includes breakfast, lunch, program materials and the continuing education certificate. Advance registration and payment are required. A late fee of $5 will apply after March 24 and the fee for walk-in registration is $75.
