Winslow Homer's painting Sleigh Ride, next Looking at Lunchtime Talk - February 27, 2008
WILLIAMSTOWN - One of a number of haunting pictures from the 1890s that emphasize sparse winter landscapes, Winslow Homer's painting Sleigh Ride will be the subject the next Looking at Lunchtime Talk at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute on Thursday, March 13. Cody Hartley, the Clark's assistant curator of American art, will lead the free talk held at 12:30 pm.
Winslow Homer's Sleigh Ride offers a striking contrast to other, more outwardly dramatic scenes the artist painted of the rugged Maine coast. Hartley will talk about how Homer painted Sleigh Ride and its relationship to more typical images the artist painted of the sea and land around his home on Prout's Neck, Maine.
The series continues on Thursday, April 10, with Sarah Lees, associate curator of European Art, discussing The Louvre from the Pont Neuf by Camille Pissarro. The talks take place at 12:30 pm on the second Thursday of every month. Attendees may purchase food from the courtyard café or bring a bag lunch to enjoy before or after the gallery talk.
The Clark is located at 225 South Street in Williamstown, MA. The galleries are open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 am to 5 pm (open daily in July and August). Admission is free November through May. Admission June 1 through October 31 is $12.50 for adults, free for children 18 and under, members, and students with valid ID.
