BCC Offers Noncredit Workshops

Berkshire Community College will offer the following noncredit workshops this spring. Except as indicated, all workshops meet on BCC’s main campus in Pittsfield.

“Medical Billing and Coding” (WKS 1160) provides the skills needed to begin a new career solving insurance billing problems, manually filing claims, and using generic forms to streamline billing procedures. This new workshop meets Tues. and Thurs. evening, March 18 through May 27, from 6 to 9:30.

“Job Description Workshop” (WKS 1423), a new course, gives participants an opportunity to critique and write effective descriptions protecting a company against discrimination charges and potential lawsuits. This one-session workshop meets Wed., March 26, from 8:30 to 4:30 at the Intermodal Center in Downtown Pittsfield.

“Leadership Essentials Series” (WKS 1380) uses a clear, practical approach to develop essential skills in supervisors, managers and individuals with leadership potential. This five-session series teaches front-line leaders to use positive leadership, encourage and support teamwork, develop employee skills and competence, establish goals and clear direction, and prevent legal liabilities. This five session series meets Tues., April 1 through April 29, from 8:30 to 4:30.


“Funds for Operating Support” (WKS 1141), a new workshop, examines effective annual campaigns and successful fun-raising techniques involving board, staff and community. Classes meet Wed. evening, April 2 through April 23, from 6:30 to 8:30.

“Planning for Profits: Small Business Marketing Plan (WKS 1220) teaches students to develop their marketing strategy, capitalize on competitive advantages, determine the best target market, and reach out to make them customers. Classes meet Mon. morning, April 7 through May 19, from 9 to 11.

Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building. 

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu. 

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building. 

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.  

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns. 

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot. 

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
