Katherine Lamb Named 2008 Young Careerist For Berkshire BPW

Katherine Taylor Lamb of Williamstown was named the 2008 Young Careerist for the Berkshire Business and Professional Women’s Organization. She will represent Berkshire BPW at the Western District Annual meeting, which will be held on April 12, 2008. She competed against two other candidates on Monday, February 4, 2008.

The other candidates were Mia Carlotto, a Guidance Counselor with the Adult Learning Center for the Pittsfield Public Schools, and Rebecca Utenis-Borders, an Assistant Branch Manager at Legacy Banks in Otis, Massachusetts.
 
Lamb is a Third Grade Teacher at Lanesborough Elementary School in Lanesborough, Massachusetts. She also is a graduate of the Berkshire Leadership Program and a Provisional Member of the Junior League Class of 2008. She is a graduate of Rhodes College and has a Master’s in Education from the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.
 

Each Young Careerist Candidate is interviewed by a panel of judges, answers questions related to the national BPW legislative platform and gives a prepared speech. The candidates are given a choice of ten topics selected by the national organization, BPW USA.
 
The judges for the evening were June Roy-Martin of Manager of Communications, HR & Business Development Manager at Quality Printing Company, Jane Winn, Executive Director of the Berkshire Environmental Action Team (BEAT) and Linda Shafiroff, co-owner of Creative Building Solutions, LLC.
 
Millie Calesky, Business and Life Coach and Inspirational Speaker, of Hinsdale, Massachusetts and Amy Perry Mercier, Associate Attorney at Martin & Oliveira, LLP in Pittsfield served as co-chairs for this annual Berkshire BPW event. The Berkshire BPW's mission is to promote full participation, equity, and economic self sufficiency for America’s working women.

Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building. 

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu. 

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building. 

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.  

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns. 

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot. 

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
