'Caligula' Finale for Classic Literature Series - March 10, 2008
WILLIAMSTOWN - The Milne Public Library presents the final program of the "A Way with Words" classic literature series, highlighting the Albert Camus classic play "Caligula" on Friday, March 14, at 7 p.m. in the Heritage Room at the Williams Inn.
The play will be experienced through shadow theater with readings performed by Robert Campanile. It is recommended for adults.
This play is an emotional and intellectual journey through the confused mind of a crazed Roman emperor. Camus has Caligula experience the absurdity of the human experience, realizing after the death of his sister/lover that "men die and they are not happy."
Caligula wants to make the impossible, possible. He has realized the meaningless of the world and wants to make everyone else aware of it. The plan is to make everything in life obviously meaningless. He arbitrarily kills and makes ludicrous decrees.
It is a story of the most human and the most tragic of errors and the story of a superior and intellectual suicide.
The programs are all free and provided by funding from the Fund for Williamstown, administered by the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation.
