Mayor Ruberto Appoints Four to Employment Board

As the Lead Elected Official for the Berkshire Workforce Area, Mayor James Ruberto has made four recent appointments to the Berkshire County Regional Employment Board (BCREB). As one of 16 workforce investment boards in Massachusetts, the BCREB oversees all publicly funded employment and training programs in Berkshire County, and serves as the link between employers, training providers, and the workforce.

Sarah M. Vega, CPB, ACS, is Director of Human Resources at Berkshire Life Insurance Company of America, Pittsfield, Mass. In this capacity, she oversees the enterprise’s efforts to attract, retain, train, motivate and reward a workforce of more than 400 associates in multiple locations. Ms. Vega began her career with Berkshire Life in 1989 in the Underwriting/New Business area, where she held a number of positions, including New Business Team Leader. A resident of Pittsfield, she is involved with a number of community organizations, including Berkshire Compact, Berkshire Regional Employment Board and the Workforce Solutions group. Cathryn Eldridge – Chief Learning Officer of SABIC Innovative Plastics. Bob Wilson is a twenty year member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local #7. Having worked as a Journeyman Wireman for the IBEW most of his career, he currently serves in the capacity of Business Agent for Local 7, representing Berkshire County.

Susan Driscoll is the Vice President – Human Resources at Petricca Industries, Inc. After graduating from college, Driscoll began her career in Human Resources at Berkshire Medical Center. In 1986, Driscoll accepted a position as Human Resource Director at Berkshire Bank & Trust, a subsidiary of the Conifer Group. Throughout her career, Driscoll held numerous Human Resource positions in Boston, MA, Providence, RI, Hartford, CT and Albany, NY as the Conifer Group transition to Bank of New England, Fleet Bank, FleetBoston Financial and finally to Bank of America. The positions included Director of Human Resources for multi-state, multi-site regions and as Director of Employee Relations for the Consumer Bank. In addition to advancing her career, Driscoll continued to obtain advanced training. She completed numerous Leadership Development programs and received several Human Resource and Organizational Effectiveness certifications.

Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building. 

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu. 

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building. 

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.  

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns. 

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot. 

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
