WILLIAMSTOWN — Mount Greylock Regional High School will once again host the annual Humane Race and Dog Jog to benefit the Berkshire Humane Society on Sunday, May 4.

Now in its sixth year, the event invites those with four legs as well as two to jog, walk or run the 5 kilometer and the 1-mile fun run for kids under 12.

More than $25,000 has been raised to help support the Humane Society shelter on Barker Road in Pittsfield; the race has also given away more than $17,000 worth of prizes to participants.

The 5 kilometer (3.11 mile) event will be run along the high school's cross country course through woods and fields. Participants don't have to have a dog to run with, but canine companions are welcome. Those who don't want to run can jog or walk the course.

Humans and dogs are encouraged to train for the event. Dogs must be older than 6 months, have proof of rabies and be leashed.

The day begins with registration at 8 a.m.; awards will be presented at 10:45. Timing will be by Finish Right Timing of Saratoga, N.Y.

The also will include a visit by Williamstown Officer Michael Ziemba and Blue the bloodhound, recently recovered from being hit by a car.

There will be dog agility demonstrations by Sugar Bush Farm of Stephentown, N.Y.; music by "D.J. Feel the Love" Mark Santella and refreshments and food for all racers.

Canine participants will receive doggie bandanas and the first 100 5K human entrants will get T-shirts. Prizes and medals will be awarded to the top three finishers in each age group.

Advance registration is $5 for the fun run and $20 for the 5K; race day registration is $10 for the fun run and $25 for the 5K. Registration is available online by clicking here.

Williamstown Board Opts to Negotiate with College on Water St. Lot

By Stephen DravisiBerkshires Staff

Newly elected board member Nate Budington, far left, participates in his first in-person meeting along with, from left, Matt Neely, Stephanie Boyd, Peter Beck, Shana Dixon and Town Manager Robert Menicocci.
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Select Board on Monday decided to enter into negotiations with Williams College on the sale of the vacant town-owned lot at 59 Water St.

But the board members made it clear that the college's proposal to acquire the lot is a starting point, not a final deal that the elected officials would accept.

"For the sake of continued conversation, I'm in favor of [awarding Williams the site], but if this process wasn't continued with the opportunity for further negotiation, I wouldn't vote to continue this," Peter Beck said. "I think that next step is necessary for us to get to a yes on this."

"I think there's wide agreement on that," Matthew Neely said just before the 5-0 vote to enter talks with the college.

Williams was the sole respondent to a town-issued request for proposals to develop the former town garage site, currently a dirt lot.

The college's stated intent is to build a new Facilities office and create up to 170 parking spaces at 59 Water Street. That use will allow the college to redevelop the current Facilities building site and parking lot as part of a reconception of the school's indoor athletic and recreation facilities.

Under the terms of the RFP, the college's proposal was subjected to review by an ad hoc advisory committee to the town manager, who brought the question to the Select Board. That board will have the final say on any purchase and sales agreement.
