Globe Sports Columnist to Speak at Williams - April 07, 2008
WILLIAMSTOWN – Jackie MacMullan, a nationally acclaimed sports columnist for The Boston Globe and a contributor to ESPN's "Around the Horn," will speak at Williams at 8 p.m. in Brooks-Rogers Recital Hall on Monday, April 14.
MacMullan will be on hand to present the 19th Frank Deford Award to the top student sports information assistant at Williams and speak on "Championship Deadlines."
A question and answer session will follow. The event is free and open to the public.
MacMullan began her career with The Globe in 1982, covering a variety of sports, including the 1986 World Series, the 1987 Stanley Cup, the 1988 Olympic Games, numerous Final Four tournaments and NBA championships. She collaborated with Larry Bird on a book chronicling his coaching career entitled "Bird Watching,'' and with Connecticut coach Geno Auriemma on his book "Geno.''
After a stint at Sports Illustrated (1995-2000) to cover the NBA, MacMullan returned to The Globe as columnist and associate editor in January of 2002.
She has won numerous national writing awards, including first place from the AP Sports Editors for investigative reporting and feature writing. MacMullan was inducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame (media division) in 2005.
In 1995, MacMullan received the Tufts University Distinguished Achievement Award. She was the named the New England Women's Leadership Award recipient in 1997, the New Fund Hall of Fame media recipient in 2000 and inducted into the University of New Hampshire Hall of Honor in 2001.
She was been honored by Tewksbury Hospital and by the New England chapter of the Huntington's Disease Society of America for her charitable efforts and she is also involved with the New England Hemophilia Association and the Colonel Daniel Marr Boys and Girls Club.
MacMullan, a cum laude graduate of the University of New Hampshire, played four years of basketball, leading the team in scoring as a sophomore and serving as a team captain as a senior. She received both the Robert Perry Student-Athlete Award and the Dean Williamson Award, given to the student who "excels in scholarship, athletics and loyalty to the University.'' |
