Hardman Scholar Jennifer Chinn and David L. Jowett
NORTH ADAMS — A North Andover resident has been named this year's recipient of the James A. Hardman Jr. Scholarship, given to outstanding students in journalism and communications.

Jennifer Chinn, a junior and co-editing manager of the weekly college newspaper, The Beacon, was awarded the scholarship on Sunday, April 6, at a luncheon at the the Orchards in Williamstown.

The only full-tuition, board and fee scholarship offered by Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, was established by the family of James A. Hardman Jr., former editor and
publisher of the North Adams Transcript.

David L. Jowett, a 1993 MCLA graduate and Hardman descendant, presented Chinn with the scholarship.

The luncheon also honored more than 60 members of the Taconic Society, of the MCLA Legacy Society and sponsors of endowed funds at the college.

Chinn said she has aspired to be a journalist since the fourth grade. She became a staff writer at The Beacon as a freshman and was senior news editor during the first semester of her sophomore year. Next fall, she will hold the position of editor-in-chief.

Previous winners include iBerkshires.com's own Jen Thomas.

<L2>Upon graduation in May 2009, Chinn hopes to work for her hometown newspaper, the Eagle Tribune, and aspires to one day write for The New York Times.

Recipients of the scholarship must have an interest in pursuing a career in journalism, have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or better, have completed a minimum of 60 credit hours, have worked on The Beacon staff or participated with a daily newspaper or other external publication as an intern, and provide a significant portfolio of work in journalism/communications for review.

Members of the Taconic Society contribute $1,000 or more each year to support MCLA. The Legacy Society recognizes and honors those who have invested in the future of the College through planned or deferred giving.

Endowed funds consist of a contribution of $10,000 or more, which establishes a donor-named fund for scholarship or program support in perpetuity.
