Robert Frost Talk At The Milne Library - April 11, 2008
After finding recognition in England, the known poet Robert Frost returned to the States and settled in South Shaftsbury, Vermont to raise his family, to tend his orchards, and to continue his writing. Frost lived in southwest Vermont for twenty years and it was here that he wrote some of his finest poetry. The beloved poem “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” was written on a hot June morning in 1922, at his South Shaftsbury homestead.
Carole Thompson, Executive Director of the Robert Frost Stone House Museum and President of the Friends of Robert Frost will relate the story of Frost’s twenty-year history in southwest Vermont, from his arrival in 1920 through the devastating loss of his wife in 1938. Despite his extensive travel and the demands of his various academic appointments, Frost and his family always maintained close ties to this area, and selected Bennington as the final resting place for him and his family. Carole Thompson also retells her unique story of reclaiming Frost’s first home in Vermont and establishing a museum there, to celebrate the poet’s life and work.
To honor Frost as a favorite American poet and a beloved New England writer is also part of the Library’s observance of National Poetry Month in April.
This program at the Milne Library in Williamstown is free and open to the public. |
