Women of Color Giving Circle

- April 30, 2008

Pittsfield - Though historians now acknowledge that women, particularly African-Americans, were pivotal in the critical battles for racial equality, Rosa Parks’ death highlights the fact that she was one of the very few female civil rights figures who are widely known. Ella Baker, Septima Poinsette Clark, Fannie Lou Hamer and many others have also risked their lives and worked tirelessly, demanding a social revolution — but history has often overlooked them.

The Women of Color Giving Circle and Youth Alive, with support from the City of Pittsfield’s Department of Cultural Development, presents: Ain’t I A Woman: Unsung African-American Heroines of the Civil Rights Movement, a drama that celebrates the lives of creative, courageous, and articulate African-American women -through song, dance, and oration. The show, performed for one night only to benefit community programs, will include dinner and feature an intergenerational cast of women and girls from throughout Berkshire County. Ain’t I A Woman: Unsung African-American Heroines of the Civil Rights Movement will be presented Thursday, May 8, 2008, beginning with a 6 p.m. dinner at the Masonic Temple, located at 116 South Street in downtown Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Tickets for dinner and performance are $12 and Seniors/Students are $8.

The Women of Color Giving Circle is a grassroots philanthropic organization under the fiscal umbrella of the Women’s Fund of Western Massachusetts. The Circle is dedicated to raising funds for the community by the community with a focus on programs aiding young women and education.
