Downing Named Hydropower Legislator Of The Year

- June 12, 2008

BOSTON — State Senator Benjamin B. Downing (D-Pittsfield) was honored with the first ever ‘Hydropower Legislator of the Year’ award, presented by the Bay State Hydropower Association (BSHA) during a small ceremony at the State House.

“It is crucial that policymakers look to and invest in renewable energy sources,” said Downing. “The Massachusetts Senate has made this type of forward thinking a priority. As the Bay State Hydropower Association represents those who implement environmentally sound, renewable water energy practices everyday in Massachusetts, it is truly an honor to receive this recognition.”

“The Bay State Hydropower Association is pleased to present the first ‘Hydropower Legislator of the Year’ award to State Senator Benjamin B. Downing,” stated Thomas A. Tarpey, President of the Bay State Hydropower Association. “Senator Downing has been a champion for hydropower and for the Association from its inception, and realizes how important hydropower is as a renewable and non-carbon energy resource, as well as an economic development tool for the Commonwealth.”

Downing’s Berkshire, Hampshire and Franklin Senate District hosts hydro power plants in the communities of Conway, Florida, Heath, Lee, Monroe, Rowe, Stockbridge, Washington and Williamstown.

The BSHA provides a forum for communication among its members for discussion and resolution of hydropower and public policy issues in Massachusetts, as well as general education of the public. Hydropower facilities in Massachusetts account for 252 megawatts of power for families and homes in the Commonwealth. The BSHA represents nearly 90% of the hydropower facilities in Massachusetts.
