Ventfort Hall Lecture: Persian Gardens Influence on Western Gardens - June 19, 2008
Lecturer and author Scott Tilden returns to Ventfort Hall Mansion and Gilded Age Museum with a slide show on “Persian Gardens and Their Influence on Western Gardens.” He will appear at the Lenox mansion on Wednesday, June 25, at 4 p.m. and after his lecture will answer questions during a Victorian Tea.
The second in Ventfort Hall’s summer lecture series, Tilden will explore the history of Persian gardens that date back as far as 4,000 years as evidenced by inscriptions on ancient pottery shards. When the Arabs conquered Persia in 637 A.D., they adopted and disseminated Persian garden traditions.
Tilden will give his audience ideas for integrating Persian design into their own gardens, showing how Persian designers combined house and garden; used water features to beautify and irrigate their gardens; cooled their buildings through shade, transpiration of plants and evaporation of water in pools; and created pavilions to make gardens usable in the evenings.
Admission to the “Persian Gardens” lecture is $15 for non-members and $12 for members. Reservations may be made by calling 413-637-3206. Ventfort Hall is located at 104 Walker Street in Lenox. |
