NORTH ADAMS — Paul Karmas drove in three runs, leading the Keene Swamp Bats to a 5-2 win over the North Adams SteepleCats on Sunday evening.

The Swamp Bats got on the board first, tallying a pair of runs in the top of the third inning on a two out, two-run single from Karmas to make it 2-0 Keene.

The 'Cats cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fourth inning as leading off the frame, Greg Van Horn hit the first homer of the season by the SteepleCats at Joe Wolfe Field to slice the Keene advantage to 2-1.

The visitors got a pair more runs in the fifth as an RBI single past a drawn in infield by Dan Grovatt made it 3-1. The next batter, Karmas, hit a sacrifice fly for his third RBI of the game and a 4-1 Keene lead. The lead was extended to 5-1 as John Barr singled home a run in the eighth.

The SteepleCats pulled a run closer in the bottom of the eighth inning on a bases-loaded walk by Mike Donato, but David Colvin came in and shut the door in the remainder of the eighth and ninth to notch his first save of the year.

The save came in support of Sean Bierman (1-0) who went six innings allowing one run. Matt Sommo (0-2) gave up four runs in five innings for the SteepleCats, suffering the loss.

Following Sunday's game, the SteepleCats will have Monday off before playing four of the next five games on the road, at Keene and Lowell on Tuesday and Wednesday and at Danbury and Torrington on Friday and Saturday. The lone home game in that stretch is on Thursday, June 26, when North Adams will take on the Sanford Mainers on "Hoosac Bank Night" at Joe Wolfe Field.
