Downing Announces Funding From Project Bread - June 30, 2008
Money to Support Summer Nutrition Programs in Pittsfield and North Adams
PITTSFIELD - State Senator Benjamin B. Downing (D-Pittsfield) today announces local grants totaling $5,600 from Project Bread’s Summer Food Service Program, which is collaborating with community leaders to provide meals to children during the summer months.
Local award recipients are the Gladys Allen Brigham Community Center: $2,500; Pittsfield Public Schools Food Service: $2,100; and the North Adams Public Schools: $1,000. These grants will help to increase the number of children who receive free and nutritious meals during summer months.
“It is important that our children have continued access to nutritious meals throughout the summer so they can return to school in the fall ready to learn,” said Downing. “I am pleased that Project Bread has chosen to support programs in Pittsfield and North Adams where the need for this funding is critical.”
Project Bread’s Summer Food Service Program is part of an initiative to leverage federal funding into low-income communities by increasing participation in federally reimbursed food programs. These additional resources will help deliver food to our most vulnerable populations.
