'Cats Sweep Manchester in Home Series

NORTH ADAMS — The North Adams SteepleCats scored seven unanswered runs from the fifth inning on, pulling away for an 8-4 win over the Manchester (Conn.) Silkworms at Joe Wolfe Field on Saturday night.

The SteepleCats worked a two-out rally in the first inning as Kevin Carby walked and stole second. Paul Hoilman followed with a walk to put runners on first and second. On an 0-2 count to Cody Stanley, Carby broke for third, stealing the bag. The throw from catcher Mike Bourdon went off the glove of the third baseman, allowing Carby to score and put North Adams up 1-0.

Manchester jumped on Matt Sommo in the second, plating four runs to take a three run edge at 4-1.

North Adams needed until the fifth to work their way back into the contest as John Malloy and T.J. Greig led off the inning with back-to-back doubles, the second scoring Malloy to make it 4-2. Following a Kevin Carby walk, Paul Hoilman flew out to right, moving Greig to third. The next batter, Cody Stanley hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Greig and cut the lead to 4-3.


The 'Cats took the lead in the sixth as with two out, Greg Van horn walked followed by John Malloy and T. J. Greig getting hit by pitches. Kevin Carby stood in and delivered a sharp single to left, bringing home Van Horn and Malloy for a 5-4 North Adams edge. The SteepleCats would add an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Sean Parker to score Cody Stanley to go up 6-4. Two more runs came across in the eighth for the 8-4 final.

Matt Sommo (1-2) picked up the win for the SteepleCats going six innings, allowing four runs, two earned for the victory. Dayton Marze worked out of a bases loaded jam in the eighth and worked a scoreless ninth for his first save. Jordan Wolfe (0-2) took the loss for Manchester.

North Adams remains home for the next two games with Sunday being Pirate Night at Joe Wolfe Field. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m.

Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building. 

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu. 

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building. 

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.  

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns. 

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot. 

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
