After garnering praise from both critics and audiences for its 2007 U.S. debut at the Pillow, the company returns to perform the U.S. premiere of Dolores, an evening length work inspired by the films of renowned Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar. Jennifer Dunning of The New York Times praised last season’s performance: “Jomar Mesquita and his Mimulus dance company ought to be bottled and sold as elixir. Forget about Vitaminwater and Red Bull…the sassy, charming young dancers of this Brazilian troupe filled the Ted Shawn Theater with infectious wit and energy as well as intriguing dance invention.” Dolores also showcases the company’s exuberant humor and charm and adds ardor and kitsch into the mix.
“All of the spices that make Latin dance spirited and deep are found in Mimulus. When I first saw them, I was taken with the company’s seamless interplay of pure dance, theatrical invention, and inviting charm. Their U.S. debut at the Pillow last season was a major hit with audiences and the press, and I’m pleased to invite them back to perform another U.S. premiere,” comments Ella Baff, Executive Director at Jacob’s Pillow.
