Main Street Stage brings Romeo and Juliet - July 14, 2008
 | | Tyler Hebb as Romeo in a rehearsal of Main Street Stage's 'Romeo and Juliet.' | NORTH ADAMS – This summer Main Street Stage brings Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare's classic tale of star-crossed love, to its black-box theater. Opening August 8, Main Street's latest production features Tyler Hebb and Emily Graham in the title roles, with Melissa Quirk directing. Romeo and Juliet is generously supported by a grant from the James and Robert Hardman Fund for North Adams of the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation.
The first act opens on the streets of Verona, Italy, where a vicious brawl breaks out between members of the warring clans of Montague and Capulet. The teenage scions of these two families fall in love and marry after a whirlwind courtship. Young love turns to tragedy as spontaneous emotion and fiery tempers lead to one untimely death after another. Shakespeare's unforgettable verse underscores the passion and drama of one of the bard's most famous tragedies.

Dear friends and colleagues,
First, let me say, I am a member of this fine cast, Lord Capulet, and proud to be so. Director Melissa Quirk has done the near impossible for a small not for profit theatre in North Adams - bringing together a cast of over twenty talented actors; light, costume, and set designers; technical crew and house managers; a fine assistant director, stage manager, and - don't let me forget - a dramaturge and fight captain - many of whom drive from as far away as Albany and South County every day to participate in what is, after all, a labor of love. Main Street Stage is a not for profit theatre that does not pay its actors and crew. We do what we do for the love of theatre, the sense of community that we build and share with one another, and for the opportunity to connect with that vital ingredient that makes theatre magical - the audience...You. So, while I may pay homage to Mel, to theatre founders Spencer and Alexia Trova, and to all the hard working people connected to this production - it is to you, the audience, that I make this plea: please come out in support of Main Street Stage! If you have never seen a production here, so much the better! This theatre - any theatre - is always a thing in flux, continually reinventing itself, evermore searching for the next laugh or tear. Come help us to discover who and what we are! Actors on a stage are exactly like a dancer without a partner; incomplete. You alone, as members of the audience, can complete the ensemble that Melissa and this cast and crew have worked so hard to create. I hope to see you there!
Romeo & Juliet runs Friday and Saturdays, August 8 through August 30. Curtain is at 8:00 pm. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students. A Community Night performance ("pay what you can") will be held on Thursday, August 14th, and a free outdoor performance will be held at Windsor Lake State Park on Sunday, August 17th at 4:00 pm. Tickets can be reserved online at www.mainstreetstage.org or by calling the box office, 413-663-3240.
