MCLA Offers New Summer Graduate Courses01:41PM / Tuesday, July 22, 2008
NORTH ADAMS – Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) in August will offer several new summer graduate classes for Berkshire County educators who teach mathematics. The graduate mathematics content area courses include “The Psychology of Mathematics Learning,” “Math Concepts and Technology” and “Foundations of Math from Arithmetic to Algebra.”
“The Psychology of Mathematics Learning,” taught by Christopher Thomas, Ph.D., will run Aug. 4-8, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the MCLA campus. This course, designed for teachers in K-8, will explore how children learn mathematics. Participants will learn how students develop an understanding of mathematical concepts and skills. They also will create a variety of cognitive strategies for facilitating effective classroom learning and teaching, and study how, why and where learning problems commonly develop.
“Math Concepts and Technology,” taught by Rose-Marie Pelletier, M.Ed., will be held online and in face-to-face meetings on the MCLA campus Aug. 11-15, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and one Saturday in October to be announced. This course will provide new ways to look at and understand mathematical concepts that are part of the middle and high school mathematics frameworks. The focus of the course will be to develop a richer understanding of the interconnection of mathematics concepts and methods of communicating this understanding to middle and high school students.
“Foundations of Mathematics from Arithmetic to Algebra,” also taught by Thomas on the MCLA campus, will run Aug. 18-22, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. This course is designed for teachers in K-8. Participants will explore mathematical concepts and how these concepts are developed through their teaching.
