Ventfort Hall: Phyllis Jaffe Compares Characters from Novels - July 23, 2008
LENOX - Teacher and lecturer Phyllis Jaffe will discuss a relatively new novel titled “Mr. Pip” for her lecture “Thank you, Mr. Dickens!” when she appears at Ventfort Hall Mansion and Gilded Age Museum on Wednesday, August 20, at 4 p.m. She will also be on hand to answer questions during the Victorian Tea that follows.
The speaker discovered the two-year old novel this past winter during her stay in Florida. She relates, “Little did Charles Dickens anticipate that his novel, “Great Expectations”, would inspire Lloyd Jones, a New Zealand author, to create in 2006 a wonderful character called "Mister Pip." Jaffe encourages members of her audience to read the not-too-long novel before attending the lecture.
“Mr. Pip” explores the horrors and beauties of human existence in an isolated village in Papua, New Guinea. The impact of Dickens’ novel influences and changes the characters’ lives forever and opens paths to knowledge and survival.
