BFAIR Receives Grant From Berkshire Life Charitable Foundation - August 01, 2008
Berkshire Family And Individual Resources has been awarded a grant by Berkshire Life Charitable Foundation to purchase a Learning Computer designed specifically for its Autism Resource Center.
According to BFAIR’s clinical specialist, Aimee Erskine, children with autism respond well to computer programs and educational software. “Because of their sensory needs, they are drawn to computers which provide visual stimulation. They learn quickly on the computer and pick the lesson right up. This is so important because often, children with autism don’t learn in traditional ways.”
The computer play station will add to BFAIR’s small but growing collection of educational toys for children with autism. Located at the Church Street office in North Adams, the Center contains research materials, devices such as the Picture Exchange Communication System, and up to date literature on autism to enable informed decision making about treatment options for adults and children with autism. It is set up in a lending library fashion where professionals and family members can access materials to review and/or use at their leisure. A computer is available for users to access the internet through established links for materials related to autism and autism spectrum disorders.
BFAIR is a not-for profit human service agency dedicated to improving the lives of adults and children with developmental disabilities, acquired brain injury, and autism. BFAIR provides services to 250 adults, adolescents, and children in north and central Berkshire County. For more information about BFAIR's programs and services visit www.bfair.org or call 413-664-9382. |
