Mill City Productions announces August Play Reading

- August 25, 2008

North Adams - Mill City Productions, a North Adams based community theatre is pleased to announce “The Last Night of Ballyhoo” by Alfred Uhry as the August selection for their monthly play reading series. The dramatic reading will be held on Wednesday, August 27th at 7pm at Mill City’s home in Building 4 (next to the Visitor’s Center) in the Western Gateway Heritage State Park in North Adams. Please park in either the Northeast lot (near NBCTC) or in the Son’s of Italy lot.

Admission is $3. Tickets will be available at the door. The reading will be directed by Mike Grogan and features Marissa Carlson, Jackie Degiorgis, Mike Grogan, Tim Mangun, George Ruberti, Cynthia Saunders and Liz Urban.

Uhry’s “Ballyhoo takes place in Atlanta, Georgia, in December of 1939. Gone with the Wind is having its world premiere, and Hitler is invading Poland, but Atlanta's elitist German Jews are much more concerned with who is going to Ballyhoo, the social event of the season. Especially concerned is the Freitag family: bachelor Adolph, his widowed sister, Beulah Levy, and their also widowed sister-in-law, Reba. Boo is determined to have her dreamy, unpopular daughter, Lala, attend Ballyhoo, believing it will be Lala's last chance to find a socially acceptable husband. The family gets pulled apart and then mended together with plenty of comedy, romance and revelations along the way. “Ballyhoo” won the 1997 Tony Award for Best Play.

Mill City Productions is a non-profit, community-based, multigenerational collaborative focused on creating an outlet for expression and education for theatrical veterans and novices alike.
