MCLA women’s soccer defeat visiting Saint Joseph College 3-1

- September 04, 2008

NORTH ADAMS – The MCLA women’s soccer fought back from an early deficit to defeat visiting Saint Joseph College of Connecticut with a 3-1 final. Jess Tietgens (Stamford, VT) and Jade Prickett (Westhammpton, MA) lead the way with a goal and an assist each.

Just seven minutes into the game the Blue Jays were awarded a corner kick. After a brief scrum in front of the goal, Paige Briglia (Watertown, CT) poked the ball past MCLA goalkeeper Jen Wehner (Cooperstown, NY). It was on that play that Wehner was injured and Cece Von Tiesenhausen-Hush (Arlington, VT) stepped in to finish out the game.

In the tenth minute of play, MCLA evened the score at one when Prickett found the back of the goal off a corner kick taken by Samantha Miller (Reading, MA). The Trailblazers finished the half with 11 shots keeping Cait Witham (Prospect, CT) busy making eight saves.

After the break, MCLA seemed to dominate in the midfield and the efforts of Prickett, Miller, Kaitlyn Dano (Schoharie, NY) and Taylor Kenyon (North Bennington, VT) paid off with two more goals. The first goal of the second half and the game winner came in the 61st minute when the 2007 MASCAC Rookie of the Year collected her first goal of the early season. Prickett took advantage of Saint Joseph’s failed offensive push when she found Tiegens in a quick transition streaking through the Blue Jays back line for a breakaway goal.

Both teams continued to battle back and forth with Saint Joseph taking nine shots in the half, but Hush was able to keep the Blue Jays off the board. With 20 minutes left MCLA was awarded a free kick at top of the box, but the attempt was drilled off the crossbar. Then with just under four minutes left the Trailblazers finally got the breathing room they had been fighting for. MCLA continued to defend hard and it finally paid off when they gained control of the ball to find Tietgens checking to the ball. She fought hard to turn the ball and get it to Harmony McGorman (Orleans, MA) who made one cut back across the top of the box and drilled a swerving shot to the upper corner to add to the Trailblazer lead.

MCLA (1-1) will travel to Bard College on Friday for a 7:00pm non-conference match-up. Saint Joseph College (1-2) will be off for a week when they travel to Bay Path College next Wednesday.
