CAMBRIDGE, MA - The Williams College volleyball team (7-7) split two matches on the first day of the MIT Invitational, setting up a spot in tomorrow's silver bracket. The Ephs began the day by extending their win streak to three with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-12, 25-17) win over Endicott but could not sustain the momentum in a 3-1 (25-23, 25-22, 16-25, 25-12) loss to Springfield.

"We are continuing to improve but we still have a lot more work to do to get where we want to be," said assistant coach Joel Williams.

Against Endicott, the Ephs were especially strong on the block and in the service game. Junior co-captain Chelsea Kubal and first year Aly McKinnon both smashed a team-high four aces and recorded 10 digs, while sophomore Eleanor Levine posted 6 blocks. Sophomore Emily Avis led the offense efficiently with 20 assists and also tallied 13 digs, while junior Whitney Hitchcock and sophomore Nicole Ballon-Landa both had 3 blocks.

In the second match, the Ephs were able to jump out to leads early and force ties late in both the first and second set but were unable to win either.  While the Ephs won the third set convincingly, it was not enough to capture the come from behind victory against Springfield.

Despite the loss, the Ephs were able to produce some impressive numbers. Sophomore Kate Anderson smashed a team high 14 kills to go along with 5 blocks, while Levine added another 6 blocks to her total for the day. McKinnon and junior Andrea Scioscia led the defense with 11 digs and 7 digs respectively, while Ballon-Landa added 7 kills and 3 blocks. Avis also recorded 33 assists.

The Ephs now look forward two matches tomorrow in the fifth place silver bracket. Day 2 action begins at 10 AM with a match against Wellesley, followed by the Eph's final match at 2 PM against either Bates or Smith.

Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

By Brittany PolitoiBerkshires Staff

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building.

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu.

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building.

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns.

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot.

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
