Eph's beat Hamilton 14-7

CLINTON, NY — It was ugly, but nevertheless it was a win as the Eph's (4-2) eked by Hamilton (2-4) on Saturday, 14-7. Senior co-captain Brian Morrissey led the way for the Eph's with an incredible 201 yards rushing and a touchdown on 42 carries.

““Basically,” said Eph coach Mike Whalen, “we just jumped on Morrissey’s back and he carried us.”

Neither team was able to move the ball very well in the wretched conditions, but Hamilton’s struggles were worse by far: they managed only three first downs the entire game and just 75 yards of total offense.

Despite the Eph's defensive dominance, Williams gave the Continentals a chance to steal one when, with under 8 minutes to go in the third quarter, a Pat Moffitt pass was picked off by Continental linebacker John Lawrence and returned 69 yards for Hamilton’s only score of the game. With the game then tied, Whalen was proud of the way the Eph defense responded: “When they picked the ball and scored, all the momentum was going in their favor, and then our defense came out and stopped them.”

After going back and forth for the next several minutes of the game, the Eph offense finally broke through with a drive spanning 3:47, 8 plays and 58 yards and culminating with a 6 yard touchdown run by (who else?) Morrissey with 2:12 to play. Whalen was proud of the drive, but even more so the players that allowed the Eph's to get to that point: “Stew Buck did a phenomenal job snapping today, Will Cronin did a great job punting the ball, Pat Barren did a tremendous job catching every punt, and because of that we were able to keep them from getting good field position, and without that they couldn’t do anything against our defense.”

Cronin finished the day with 9 punts for 288 yards for an average of 32 yards per punt. Four of his punts were downed inside the 20 yard line. As for Morrissey’s performance, Whalen had this to say: “42 carries, 201 yards in terrible conditions?  I think that pretty much speaks for itself.”

Williams’ next game is on homecoming next Saturday. Game time is set for 1:00 pm at Weston Field versus the visiting Cardinals of Wesleyan.

Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

By Brittany PolitoiBerkshires Staff

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building.

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu.

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building.

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns.

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot.

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
