Mountain Road School Fundraiser To Fight World Hunger

The students, teachers and families of Mountain Road School invite the community to join them for a special meal to help end world hunger.

The fourth annual Empty Bowls Dinner will be held at 6pm on Wednesday, November 19th in the Abode of the Message Dining Room, 5 Abode Road, New Lebanon, NY.

With a donation of $15 for adults and $5 for children, guests will receive a meal of homemade soup and bread, and choose from a selection of unique handcrafted ceramic bowls to use at the dinner and to take home.

This year Mountain Road School has collaborated with the Darrow School to create exquisite hand made bowls. Children from preschool through grade six worked with Darrow School’s hands-to-work students under the tutelage of Mona Seno, Darrow School’s art department chair and ceramic instructor. Each handmade bowl, made from donated Sheffield Pottery clay, is impressed with natural items: autumn leaves, twigs, pine needles, bark, or berries and then fired and glazed.

Proceeds from the fundraiser will be donated to Charlie's Pantry in New Lebanon and Oxfam America. The Empty Bowls Dinner raises awareness of local and global hunger while allowing children the chance to give selflessly for the benefit of those in need locally and internationally. Special thanks go to Darrow School, The Abode of the Message and Sheffield Pottery for supporting the event.

Service Learning is a critical component of the curriculum at Mountain Road School, according to Kathleen Bailer, Director. "By creating the bowls, preparing the soup and bread, decorating the tables and providing a song and blessing for the meal, the children truly internalize what it means to give selflessly for the benefit of those in need," Ms. Bailer says.

Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

By Brittany PolitoiBerkshires Staff

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building.

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu.

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building.

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns.

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot.

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
