Berkshire AHEC Announces Upcoming Ethics Program
The Berkshire Area Health Education Center (AHEC) will offer a continuing professional development conference entitled “Integrating Ethics into Professional Practice,” November 19, 2008 from 9:00am-3:30pm at the Crowne Plaza, One West Street, Pittsfield. This full day conference will offer healthcare and human service professionals the opportunity to assess their ethical decision-making styles and examine the boundaries of ethical practices as they are determined by individual roles within diverse service delivery models.Workshops will be offered that will highlight new protocols for ethical decision making and define levels of response and core questions as they relate to ethical dilemmas. Interactive workshops will also present a basic introduction to healthcare ethics, related to end of life care and will discuss the ethical issues around withholding CPR in skilled nursing facilities. Also, sessions will examine the ethical principles of autonomy relating to surrogate decision-making and discuss ethical dilemmas and potential conflicts that can arise when personal values and beliefs are challenged.

Min., M.Div., Spiritual Counselor, Old Colony Hospice, Alberto Barreto, Ph.D, Trainer, MA Executive Office of Health and Human Services Department of Mental Retardation, Judith Cronin-Flaherty, RN, MA, MSN, Admissions Coordinator, Hallmark Health VNA and Hospice and Albert J. Grudzinskas, Jr., J.D, Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry, Coordinator of Legal Studies Department of Psychiatry, University of Massachusetts Medical School.
Program registration and continental breakfast begin at 8:30am. 6 continuing education credits will be available for nurses and 5 credits for physical and occupational therapists, nursing home administrators, social workers, licensed mental health and substance abuse counselors, licensed marriage and family therapists and psychologists. Registration is $92 before November 5, 2008. Late registration accepted through November 18, 2008 is $97 and the fee for registrations the day of the conference is $102.
