WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - The Student Athlete Advisory Council at Williams College is pleased to bring Travis Roy to Williams on Tuesday, January 20th at 7pm. The Roy speech will be in the '62 Center on the Williams campus. Admission is free and the event is open to the public.
Travis Roy was recruited to play Division I ice hockey at Boston University. Eleven seconds into his first shift of his freshman year he was paralyzed from the neck down. After extensive surgery and rehab he returned to BU and completed school in a total of five years. Roy and his family created the Travis Roy Foundation, which gives grants to paraplegic and quadriplegics and helps fund research.
Travis Roy is a renowned motivational speaker and speaks at schools, companies and organizations across the country. Roy's speeches focus on three main areas: conquering life's hurdles, setting goals, and pain, hope and humor.
Roy emphasizes finding a purpose in life, discovering what defines a person and how you can find happiness. "There are times in our life when we choose our challenges and other times when the challenges simply choose us," Roy has stated. "It is what we do in the face of those challenges that defines who we are and more importantly who we can and will become."
Travis Roy credits the love of his family and friends for helping him make it through the toughest part of his recovery and continue on through life. Although he has faced a lot of adversity in life, Roy's efforts are the embodiment of hope and compassion towards people and about life.
