WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - With five goals and two assists from Ephs junior Whitney Thayer, Williams women’s lacrosse (3-1, 1-1 NESCAC) dominated the RPI Red Hawks (3-1) with a final score of 13-6.

RPI was first on the board with a free position shot from Stephanie Caouette less than a minute into the game. Williams answered back with two goals from Thayer and one from senior Julia Nawrocki in the next six minutes. After a period of settled attack, Thayer scored her third goal at 17:08.

Sam Fennessy score for the Red Hawks to bring the score to 4-2 at 12:07, but Thayer responded quickly with an unassisted goal less than a minute later.  After another goal for both teams, Ephs finished the half on a high note with a goal from senior Britt Spackman at 0:53, and ended the half up 7-3.

Williams came out strong in the second half, putting three more points on the board before RPI was able to score at 18:56. However the Ephs, weren't done. Spackman, Sophomore Anne Marie Burke, and freshman Taylor Fleishhacker all scored unassisted goals before the game was out.

RPI played strong to the end, scoring two goals after their time out with 3:45 left in the game. The game ended 13-6 with the advantage to the Ephs.

Sophomore goalkeeper Julia Schreiber played the first 48 minutes for the Ephs, making six saves. Freshman Kate Foley finished in the net for Williams, making no saves, but recovering two ground balls. Ariana Hood played all 60 minutes for the Red Hawks, making twelve saves.

Ephs head coach Chris Mason credited RPI for strong play and was happy with her team’s performance. “We were patient today, and waited for good feeds on offense. They were a good and fast team, but we played well together.” Mason noted that senior Lizzy Burns’ presence on defense and Thayer’s deceptiveness on offence were invaluable.

Williamstown Board Opts to Negotiate with College on Water St. Lot

By Stephen DravisiBerkshires Staff

Newly elected board member Nate Budington, far left, participates in his first in-person meeting along with, from left, Matt Neely, Stephanie Boyd, Peter Beck, Shana Dixon and Town Manager Robert Menicocci.
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Select Board on Monday decided to enter into negotiations with Williams College on the sale of the vacant town-owned lot at 59 Water St.

But the board members made it clear that the college's proposal to acquire the lot is a starting point, not a final deal that the elected officials would accept.

"For the sake of continued conversation, I'm in favor of [awarding Williams the site], but if this process wasn't continued with the opportunity for further negotiation, I wouldn't vote to continue this," Peter Beck said. "I think that next step is necessary for us to get to a yes on this."

"I think there's wide agreement on that," Matthew Neely said just before the 5-0 vote to enter talks with the college.

Williams was the sole respondent to a town-issued request for proposals to develop the former town garage site, currently a dirt lot.

The college's stated intent is to build a new Facilities office and create up to 170 parking spaces at 59 Water Street. That use will allow the college to redevelop the current Facilities building site and parking lot as part of a reconception of the school's indoor athletic and recreation facilities.

Under the terms of the RFP, the college's proposal was subjected to review by an ad hoc advisory committee to the town manager, who brought the question to the Select Board. That board will have the final say on any purchase and sales agreement.
