STOCKBRIDGE, Mass. - IS183 Art School (IS183) today was awarded a $5,000 grant by the TD Banknorth Charitable Foundation. The grant funds will be used to develop the "Learning through Arts" program currently being tested at the Morningside Community School in Pittsfield.

The "Learning through Arts” (LtA) Program is an art making curriculum for Massachusetts elementary school children (K-5) designed to complement existing programming by reinforcing key academic concepts, as outlined by the Department of Education, through the study of an art form.

Each LtA module follows the same basic model. Students meet for 8 sessions, once a week after-school. The children are guided through art-making projects that include an element of research. The culmination of the program is an ‘art show’ and certificate ceremony to which parents, teachers and the larger community are invited.

The modules are:

“Learning Health through Mixed Media” (Kindergarten) “Learning Reading through Fiber Arts” (Grade 1) “Learning Grammar through Painting” (Grade 2) “Learning Math through Printmaking” (Grade 3) “Learning Life Science through Sculpture” (Grade 4) “Learning American History through Ceramics” (Grade 5)

The Program Ending "Art Show" for Kindergarten, First and Second Grade sessions is scheduled for Tuesday, April 14th at Morningside Community School. For further information please contact IS183 Art School at 413-298-5252 x100 or info@is183.org.

Located half-way between Great Barrington and Pittsfield in the Interlaken village of Stockbridge, IS183 Art School offers year-round programs in ceramics, painting, drawing, fiber arts, sculpture, mixed media and more for children, teens and adults.

Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

By Brittany PolitoiBerkshires Staff

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building.

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu.

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building.

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns.

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot.

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
