The Colonial Announces 2009–2010 Season

PITTSFIELD, Mass. – The Colonial Theatre announces its 2009–2010 season. Tickets are on sale now to Members and to the general public on April 7. Membership begins at $50. Season four begins on June 4, 2009 with a four-show run of Mel Brooks’ The Producers and concludes on May 8, 2010 with the double-bill, family show Goodnight Moon & The Runaway Bunny. Tickets may be purchased in person at the Colonial Ticket Office at 111 South Street Monday-Friday 10am-5pm, by calling (413) 997-4444 or online beginning April 7 at www.TheColonialTheatre.org.

Many months of preparation have gone into organizing this diverse and exciting season at the Colonial. Highlights include: The Second City, Canadian Brass, Mel Brooks’ The Producers, Richie Havens, Sister’s Christmas Catechism, P.D.Q. Bach & Peter Schickele, The Irish Rovers, The Wedding Singer, David Sedaris, The Glenn Miller Orchestra, Herman’s Hermit’s Starring Peter Noone, Seussical, James Naughton, Tom Chapin, The Dave Brubeck Quartet and Mandy Patinkin.

The 12 month season is divided into 11 series including: Broadway, Just for Laughs, Great Night Out, Pop & Rock, Classical, Family Time, American Cabaret Theatre, Singer–Songwriter, Woodstock at 40, Spoken Word and Holiday Cheer. Each series includes some of the most talented artists and live entertainers in their respective fields.

“Our ongoing mission is to be a community resource in entertainment and education. We purposely present programs that appeal to the broadest possible audience. Our goal is to make the performing arts as inclusive as possible,” says David Fleming, Colonial Executive Director.

Greylock Federal Credit Union is the exclusive sponsor for the Family Time series for a fourth year. Individual event sponsors include Berkshire Bank for Girl’s Night: The Musical, Nelson Furlano, CPA for An Nollaig: An Irish Christmas with Eileen Ivers. Crane & Co. and The Legacy Banks Foundation have made generous sponsorship donations to support the entire season. Berkshire Life Insurance Company, Cain Hibbard & Myers, PC and Interprint, Inc. are co-sponsoring the Colonial’s Performing Arts for Schools Program this season.


“We have so many generous and visionary people to thank for the restoration and success of this architectural treasure. The ongoing support from local businesses and the acceptance of the people in the community is tremendous. I hope everyone who has caught the spirit of this great theatre will buy tickets, participate as advertisers and become annual contributors through memberships,” says Gary Scarafoni, President, Colonial Theatre Board of Trustees.

“We have established two new partnerships this year, the first with C-R Productions of Cohoes to bring The Producers and The Mikado, the second with The Berkshire Symphony Orchestra for two performances in the fall. We are proud to continue our involvement with the Pittsfield CityJazz Festival and support of Think Pink among many community groups,” says David Fleming, Executive Director.

This season, the Colonial is collaborating with many local community organizations and presenters along with Think Pink and the Pittsfield CityJazz Festival, including: The Legacy Banks Foundation Lecture Series, Chapters Book Store, Romance, Soul Rock n’ Roll, Berkshire Concert Choir, The Berkshire Bridal Show, Ballets Metropolis, Berkshire Symphony Orchestra, Berkshire Bach Society, Oldies but Goodies, Albany Berkshire Ballet, Westfield State College, Warren Miller and many more to be announced.

Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building. 

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu. 

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building. 

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.  

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns. 

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot. 

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
